Thornton Police arrest two, investigation ongoing after shooting
The Thornton Police Department has arrested an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old male in connection with a shooting that occurred around 6:30 p.m. on July 22 at an apartment complex near the 11800 block of York Street. This appears to be an isolated incident involving individuals known to one another. There is no believed threat to the public.
Officers were in the area when they heard multiple gunshots. Upon arriving at the scene, they observed the 18-year-old male armed with a handgun. When officers gave verbal commands, the suspect attempted to flee. After a short foot pursuit, officers deployed a Taser and took him into custody.
Two additional individuals believed to be involved were detained at the scene. During the investigation, officers identified the 16-year-old male as a shooting suspect.
A short time later, officers were notified of a walk-in gunshot victim at a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The 18-year-old was arrested for aggravated assault and illegal discharge of a firearm. He was released pending further investigation.
The 16-year-old was arrested for aggravated assault, illegal discharge of a firearm, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. He was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center.
“We understand that incidents like this are unsettling for our community,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. “Our officers responded swiftly to a dangerous situation, and we’re grateful no bystanders were injured. We remain committed to a thorough investigation and to holding those involved accountable, and we thank the residents and witnesses who stepped forward to provide information.”
